As the story goes, I loved Old Dolly from the moment I could toddle around Great Auntfeen's home at 447 Sherwood Road with a doll in tow. Whenever we visited, I always chose Old Dolly over the many other antique dolls perched on the shelf in the sewing room. I loved to hold and carry her around during our time with Auntfeen. But Old Dolly was not only old, she was breakable. My mother worried I would drop her and discouraged Auntfeen from letting me hold Old Dolly. Disregarding my mother's wishes, Auntfeen always gave me permission and trusted me to take care of her 100-year-old porcelain doll. With our bags packed in the car, I knew it was time to return to our home in Alexandria, LA. I would sadly put Old Dolly back in her rocking chair. The tears I shed over leaving Old Dolly broke Auntfeen's heart. On one such departure, my separation from Old Dolly was particularly difficult. Auntfeen pulled my mother aside and told her she wanted me to take Old Dolly home with me. My mother felt that I wasn't ready; at two years old, I was too young! Plus, she wasn't going to reward my tears with a treat. However, in typical Auntfeen fashion, she devised a plan. She told my mother that I had gentle hands and that she would give Old Dolly to me that following spring. After that visit, the letters began.
